Hi! My name is Rachel, and I have gut issues.

My tummy troubles began in 2017 when I went on a business trip to Seattle. On the trip, I had eaten a lot of seafood and drank a lot of alcohol, with long nights and early mornings to boot. I came home very sick with what I thought at the time was food poisoning and tonsilitis. I took antibiotics but didn’t get better.

Four months later, I was keeled over in abdominal pain. My symptoms became worse and worse until I demanded to be referred to a GI doctor. They didn’t find anything initially, but after putting me under for a colonoscopy, they found a c-dif infection that had been left untreated for four months.

Little did I know, that was only the beginning of my gut healing journey.

It was shortly after that when my primary doctor told me I had “reached the limits of Western Medicine.” I didn’t know what that meant at the time. When my symptoms didn’t go away after the c-dif treatment, I was skeptical to take pharmaceuticals for my gut symptoms. Instead, I longed for a cure. It was then that I discovered functional medicine, and their “root cause” approach.

After a friend referred me to a functional doctor, I discovered that I actually have SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), SIFO/candida, and the phenomenon known as leaky gut. I also developed an autoimmune disorder and thyroid disease, which my doctor believes is due to my leaky gut.

Since that day, I have focused on healing. I completely revamped my diet with the help of my care team, and it has completely changed my life for the better. I promised myself that if I ever recovered, I would do whatever I could to help others who are also suffering. Sharing my recipes here is my way of doing just that.
